Title: Angelic Conflict part 174: Human history (heart) - HEB 4:12-16; 3:7-13; COL 3:12-13; 1TI 1:5; 1CO 3:12-15; 2PE 4:12-13; MAT 10:32-33.

The deceitfulness of sin [lusts of deceit], that sin can fulfill, produces hardness of the heart, HEB 3:7-13.

HEB 3:7 Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says,

"Today if you hear His voice,

HEB 3:8 Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me,

As in the day of trial in the wilderness,

HEB 3:9 Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me,

And saw My works for forty years.

HEB 3:10 "Therefore I was angry with this generation,

And said, 'They always go astray in their heart;

And they did not know My ways';

HEB 3:11 As I swore in My wrath,

'They shall not enter My rest.'"

HEB 3:12 Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God.

HEB 3:13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," lest anyone of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Understanding our position in Christ leads to a virtuous heart, COL 3:12-13.

COL 3:12 And so, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;

COL 3:13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.

The word of God cleanses the heart of false doctrines and wrong thinking, 1TI 1:5; 2TI 2:22.

1TI 1:5

But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

2TI 2:22

Now flee from youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

From such passages as these it is to be seen that the term heart represents specific exercise of the realities of human life and may thus, to some extent, be distinguished from the soul and the spirit, though here, again, no close line may be drawn and human speculation is of little profit. [L.S. Chafer; Systematic Theology, vol 2]

HEB 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

HEB 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

There is no point to playing games with God. There is no point to putting on masks with God or being hypocritical towards Him. His omniscience knows every thought you have and, as this passage states, we have to deal with Him eventually, so might as well do so now and deal with your relationship with Him.

"have to do" - o` logo,j[ho logos] = play on words with verse 12 which is the ho logos of God. In classical Greek this phrase meant "to give an account."

We will all give an account and we will do so based solely on the ho logos. Since all of our heart is laid bare to His omniscient eyes then why not deal with the word of God now rather than ignoring it and then being judged by it later?

John 12:48

"He who rejects Me, and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word [ho logos] I spoke is what will judge him at the last day.

1CO 3:12 Now if any man builds upon the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,

1CO 3:13each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it, because it is to be revealed with fire; and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work.

1CO 3:14If any man's work which he has built upon it remains, he shall receive a reward.

1CO 3:15If any man's work is burned up, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as through fire.

1PE 4:12 Beloved, do not be surprised [stop being shocked at your suffering] at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you;

“fiery ordeal” - pu,rwsij[purosis] = on fire, a burning, a refining fire.

“for your testing” - pro,j peirasmo,n u`mi,n[pros peirasmon humin] = testing allowed by God to be face to face with you.

Pros means that you are aware of the testing. It is allowed to happen by God so that your virtue or lack of can become known to you. This is common in the CWL so don’t be shocked by it. “Why is this happening to me?” You’re in a war!

1PE 4:13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing; so that also at the revelation of His glory, you may rejoice with exultation.

It was God’s permissive will that allowed Christ to be unfairly treated by mankind the way He was. And so, when we see the same in our own life, we must have the concentration, thinking, determination, and passion in our hearts to be able to rejoice in these sufferings knowing that it is producing in us an eternal weight of glory, Christ’s glory, far beyond comparison. This exultation is to know at the judgment seat of Christ that your life brought glory to Him.

The One who will judge us has already passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God.
