Clothing yourself with the new self; John 15:18; Eph 4:22-24.

Class Outline:

Title: Clothing yourself with the new self; John 15:18; EPH 4:22-24.

Announcements/opening prayer:

In this cosmic system the believer is covered by the love of Christ and he will not be punished. Christ has overcome the world.

If the believer understands through doctrine that he has lost his old life and he will realize his new life then he will travel beyond his dreams.

1 Cor 2:6 Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away [cosmic system viewpoint];

1 Cor 2:7 but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom, which God predestined before the ages to our glory;

1 Cor 2:8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood [comic blindness]; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;

1 Cor 2:9 but just as it is written,

"Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,

And which have not entered the heart of man,

All that God has prepared for those who love Him."

1 Cor 2:10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.

ROM 13:14

But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.

Lust, living for self, feeding self’s pleasures at the expense of others is the cosmic system’s way and it is totally antithetical to God’s way.

Lust in any area is a desperate attempt to clothe ourselves with worldly things, none of which will accomplish the comfort that we crave.

Anyone who pursues the cosmic way may prosper for a temporary time, but eventually they lose it all. And before they lose it on paper, they lose it in their souls. That’s the end of the movie that the cosmos doesn’t show. No one truly prospers in the cosmic system.

On the contrary, God’s system has been designed with that very concept in mind, true soul prosperity directly from Christ’s soul prosperity and so the soul must be clothed with Christ.

2 Cor 3:18

 But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

The overcomer in time is clothed with Christ and in eternity he will be clothed in a special white garment that signifies his victory over the cosmos.

REV 3:4

'But you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their garments; and they will walk with Me in white; for they are worthy.

REV 3:5

'He who overcomes shall thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father, and before His angels.

Putting on or clothing yourself with Christ occurs in position and in experience much like sanctification.

GAL 3:27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ [baptism of the Spirit] have clothed yourselves with Christ.

GAL 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

GAL 3:29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.

That is positional clothing. We will examine two passages where we are commanded to put on the new self.

New self - the brand new creature in Christ created at salvation through the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

You will notice in both passages that there is a separation from one place/system/being and unto another. No one can truly be independent, which is what satan has been striving for.

EPH 4:17 This I say therefore, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk [believers or unbeliever trapped in the world system], in the futility of their mind,

“just as the Gentiles” - The reversionistic believer is influenced by the society in which he lives.

“futility” - matiaotes [matiao,thj] = emptiness, nothingness, or the void caused by a vacuum. It indicates a lack of thought, sloppy thought, and unstable thought.

The principle here is that the way people live only reflects the way people think, “as a man thinks in his heart so he is.”

EPH 4:18a being darkened in their understanding,

JC is the light so this is the exclusion of Him. Darkness is the absence of light, John 1:5

And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

EPH 4:18b excluded [passive voice - they receive the alienation from the life of God] from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them [this creates the vacuum], because of the hardness of their heart;

Hardness of the heart is similar to the plastering over the eyes. Every thought contrary to God causes a layer of hard plaster over the eyes of the heart.

Now comes the result of the blindness and hardness cause by the vacuum of ignorance. They can’t enjoy life. They’re believers but they have missed the happiness of God and so they go on a frantic search for it.

EPH 4:19 and they, having become callous [a callous has no feeling, i.e. it cannot enjoy touch], have given themselves over to sensuality, for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness.

“sensuality” - excess, licentiousness, absence of restraint, indecency, or wantonness.

“impurity” = immorality; the rejection of the laws of divine establishment.

“greediness” = a covetous desire to have more. Implacability.

Next is the solution:

EPH 4:20 But you did not learn Christ in this way,

All doctrine comprises the mind of Christ, 1 Cor 2:16.

EPH 4:21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth [the truth behind every matter] is in Jesus,

EPH 4:22 that [not in original], in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,

Rebound and doctrine break the pattern of the old manner of life so that it loses its momentum. Old self = old sin nature.

Don’t trust the sin nature. It has always been corrupt and it always will be corrupt. It will attempt to fool you into thinking it’s not.

EPH 4:23 and that you be renewed in the spirit [G/HS] of your mind,

Doctrinal intake fills the vacuum with truth and pushes out the ignorance.

EPH 4:24 and put on [clothe yourself] the new self, which in the likeness of God [incorruptible; 1John 3:9] has been created in righteousness and holiness [set apart from the world system] of the truth [the light].

COL 3:5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

/Worshipping these things that God has given is no different than the idol sculptor who makes a fire with half the wood and an idol with the other half and falls to the ground before it.\

COL 3:6 For it is on account of these things that the wrath of God will come,

COL 3:7 and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.

COL 3:8 But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.

COL 3:9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices,

COL 3:10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him

COL 3:11 — a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all.
