Absolute Freedom from the Power of Darkness (Colossians 1:13).

Introduction

 

Jesus was mocked on the cross. When they hurled insults at Him and challenged Him to prove Himself, they reveled that the One who had confronted their ignorance and selfishness was nailed there. One of those challenges is significant for our study today:

 

“He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” (MAT 27:43)

 

Today we will see what we have been delivered from. It includes sin, but it is more.

 

COL 1:13-14

For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (COL 1:13-14)

 

Main idea: Because of Christ’s sacrifice, every believer has been delivered from the domain of darkness that has, since the Fall, ruled over the hearts of mankind to their deepest woe. That freedom is absolute in standing; the conflict remains real until the kingdom is fully manifested.

 

I. Rescued: the decisive act at salvation

 

Delivered is ruomai - to rescue from danger, save, rescue, deliver, preserve.

 

The aorist tense points to a completed act at conversion. “Us” is Paul and every believer.

 

The gospel is not a rehabilitation. It is a rescue operation. Delivered and transferred.

 

From the domain of darkness. Exousia is not mere force. It is ruling authority, jurisdiction, the right to govern.

 

Darkness stands in contrast to the light of verse 12 - the life of Christ.

 

Deliverance from an alien power is a major Old Testament theme.

 

EXO 14:30

Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians.

 

EXO 6:6

I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

 

Many psalms sing of that deliverance and give glory to God as the only One with power to save, while man is too feeble to do it.

 

The power is strong. It has held the world in its grip even while the gospel has been planted across the earth.

 

MAT 2:15

that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, "Out of Egypt did I call My Son."

 

II. From what: the domain of darkness

 

Its nature

 

The domain of darkness is the dominion of Satan taking the form of an established, usurped authority. It is saturated with moral delusion, woe, falsehood, hatred, ignorance, vice, unbelief, sin, and death. It is staffed with sinister forces marshaled against Christ. It is not a true kingdom. It is illegitimate, disorderly, unstable, tyrannical. It produces confusion, fear, distrust, unhappiness, and slavery to unrighteousness.

 

Its reach

 

Its workings run through all of history; it remains the atmosphere over the world.

 

…the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience… (EPH 2:2)

 

…spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. (EPH 6:12)

 

Satan disguises himself as an angel of light… his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. (2CO 11:14-15)

 

Its limits for the believer

 

Jesus said at His arrest, “This hour and the power of darkness are yours” (LUK 22:53). He was never a subject of that domain.

 

He entered its hour as a conqueror.

 

So it is with us. We are no longer under its authority. We still face its assault.

 

Already and not yet.

 

If the transfer is already and not yet, the same is true of our deliverance. We have been delivered. Yet:

 

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. (EPH 6:12)

 

Like our Lord in His first advent, we still war with these powers.

 

We war as He did. We endure with God’s power. We have patience with all people by God’s power. We bear fruit in every good work while the domain of darkness glorifies every bad work. We increase in the knowledge of God while it teaches that man does not need God. We are lights in a dark world, as He was.

 

We are not alone. We have Him and the Spirit within.

 

Our deliverance from the domain is the guarantee that if we take up our crosses and follow the Lord, we will be delivered from its power in daily life:

 

The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. (2TI 4:18)

 

III. Where it still presses, and how Christ breaks it

 

Israel was delivered from Egypt, yet some still carried idols in their luggage and in their hearts.

 

Pride and blindness. The domain blinds people. “The god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ” (2CO 4:4).

 

Christ has already broken that hold by new birth that is all of Him, and so begun the path of genuine humility.

 

The will. The domain gives a false purpose centered on self—

Christ has already given us the Father’s will. Opened eyes see a purpose not made by man but by the Almighty Father who loves us.

 

The intellect. The domain rules through worldly wisdom, counterfeit enlightenment.

 

Christ has already given the Holy Spirit within and opened His wisdom in the Scriptures.

 

The conscience. The domain turns good and evil upside down.

 

Christ has already given us Himself—a new heart and a new conscience—and He models goodness in His life and teaching.

 

Conclusion

 

The domain of darkness enslaves mankind. God sent the Son to set us free.

 

Love Him for it. He was mocked and challenged to deliver Himself, which He could have done. He decided not to, so that He could deliver you. Learn Him so that you will love Him. And when you do, you will follow Him.
