Intro:
The last Passover and institution of the Lord’s Supper - giving the disciples the feast for the future age.
The Lord Jesus is fulfilling the story of redemption of Israel; a story begun with Moses and fulfilled by the greater prophet.
Matthew’s emphasis is Judas.
Why put a sinner who was a close friend but betrayer next to Him?
When we love, we will experience pain in our relationships, misunderstanding, insult, persecution, and perhaps most painful, the betrayal of someone you love.
Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?" 18 And He said, "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples."'" 19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
20 Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 21 As they were eating, He said, "Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me." 22 Being deeply grieved, they each one began to say to Him, "Surely not I, Lord?" 23 And He answered, "He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. 24 "The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born." 25 And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself."
He who dipped his hand … : This is not to indicate who it was for they all dipped. It was to reveal the heart and fulfillment of the prophecy.
Even my close friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.
Jesus reveals His understanding of the necessary unfolding of prophecy.
Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE SCATTERED.'
"How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?"
Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."
"Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?" [ISA 52:14
So His appearance was marred more than any man]
Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel; 10 AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER'S FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME."
Finally, Jesus lets Judas know: “I know who you are.” But He protects Judas’ identity, likely because the others would have tried to stop Judas - and he must go now.
1. The Son of Man is the orchestrator:
Not that He controls things in His own way, but that He knows the Father’s way and acts confidently on it.
He commands the disciples to prepare the Passover.
He dictates to the “somebody” that the time has come and it will be at his house.
Jesus Christ’s confident and assertive way comes because of three things.
He knows the Scripture.
He believes the Scripture.
He acts upon the Scripture.
2. The table of fellowship is broken.
Love is unity and the unity at the final Passover table is broken.
The disciples need to know that there is a betrayer in the midst.
They need to wait until revelation is clear as to whom and what (don’t have to know why, for Judas we still don’t).
Principle: Fellowship of many is a unity of mind of individuals.
Love is unity.
Example: the body of Christ.
being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift.
Application: church discipline
It is actually reported that there is immorality among you, and immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father's wife. 2 You have become arrogant and have not mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be removed from your midst.
Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? 7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 I wrote you in my letter not to associate with immoral people; 10 I did not at all mean with the immoral people of this world, or with the covetous and swindlers, or with idolaters, for then you would have to go out of the world. 11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler — not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? 13 But those who are outside, God judges. REMOVE THE WICKED MAN FROM AMONG YOURSELVES.
Paul is quoting from several passages in Deuteronomy: DEU 13:5; DEU 17:7, DEU 17:12; DEU 22:21.
Division ruins love’s expression.
3. Real love begets hate when it is refused.
Even my close friend in whom I trusted,
Who ate my bread,
Has lifted up his heel against me.
For it is not an enemy who reproaches me,
Then I could bear it;
Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me,
Then I could hide myself from him.
13 But it is you, a man my equal,
My companion and my familiar friend;
14 We who had sweet fellowship together
Walked in the house of God in the throng.
Why is Judas there? It is the nature of love.
Love is separation.
There must be a man and God for them to love one another.
Real love, God’s love sacrifices for the benefit of another.
Love for self is to love a form given by God but apart from Him. This is why we always have to love the Lord before we can love, real love, anyone, even ourselves (in the proper sense).
Real love loses self to give and when that giving is pointed at selfishness, the sacrifice and loss of self forms hatred in the selfish.
The betrayer is at Passover with the Lord because the Lord loves.
It is also the reason that the others are there and why you and I are there when we celebrate the feast, the new feast.
