Main passage:
1TH 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit
Theme: The Holy Spirit is in you to make you like Christ as you follow Him through trust and obedience.
- You have to know who Christ is. The Holy Spirit is in you to make that happen (JOH 16:14).

- There has to be a reality to the Person of Christ to you.
 - That reality leads to real trust which stokes the fire of the HS within.

 - Quenching the Spirit is living in a manner that fails to allow the Spirit to do what He pleases.
 - The new creation (born again believer) is the light of the world.

- He or she, being like Christ, will be an extraordinary witness of the gospel.
 - Light of the world: EPH 5:7-10; Php 2:14-16
 - Put God’s promises to the test by believing and living in them.

- Trusting attitudes bring the Spirit into play.

 - The new creation was always the ‘final’ design of mankind designed by God and always meant to be indwelt by the Holy Spirit, EZE 36:27.

 - Passages about the Holy Spirit’s ministry in us.

- Do not grieve the Spirit, EPH 4:30.

- Grieving: walking like an unbeliever, holding on to the old self, laying aside the new self, holding on to lies and hate.

 - Be filled with the Spirit, EPH 5:18.

- “Dissipation” is wasting what blessings God has given you (all are a part of eternal life).

 - The word of the Lord richly in you, COL 3:16.

- There is no mention of the Spirit in this passage, however the results of the ‘indwelling’ word are exactly the same as the filling of the Spirit (EPH 5:19-21).

 - Do not grieve the Spirit, EPH 4:30.

 - Comparing all passages with 1TH 5:19.

- We find joy, thanksgiving as a manner of life (not just every once in a while).
 - We find grieving, quenching, and filling to be closely related to our own faith and determination to live in obedience to God’s will.
 - We choose to do it, and God will make it happen.
 - That God is not going to force us to be like Christ is obvious. The active commands: always give thanks, without ceasing pray, and for everything give thanks shows us that we have to make decisions in a life of not quenching the Holy Spirit.
