Israel will not fight against the oppression of the enemy. God raises us Samson to start that fight and to reveal to His own people and the enemy that in Him alone there is power and victory.  

 

Samson would not move on the Philistines on his own, but this marriage would throw him into the fray and so the Lord arranged this marriage.

 

God is in control of all of human history, while He does not cause any sin or evil. He can manipulate events to His good pleasure in whatever way He chooses, while He never overrules the self-determination of one person. As the Psalmist stated, it is inscrutable how He does it, such knowledge is too wonderful for us. This should give every believer great comfort, and if it was actually known by the world, which one day it will be, it would smash the arrogance of man who thinks he is the captain of his ship and the maker of his destiny.

 

PSA 135:6

Whatever the Lord pleases, He does,

In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.

 

ISA 46:8 "Remember this, and be assured;

Recall it to mind, you transgressors.

 

ISA 46:9 "Remember the former things long past,

For I am God, and there is no other;

I am God, and there is no one like Me,

 

ISA 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning

And from ancient times things which have not been done,

Saying, 'My purpose will be established,

And I will accomplish all My good pleasure';

 

ISA 46:11 Calling a bird of prey from the east,

The man of My purpose from a far country.

Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.

I have planned it, surely I will do it."

 

LUK 1:37

"For nothing will be impossible with God."

 

JDG 14:5 Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came as far as the vineyards of Timnah; and behold, a young lion came roaring toward him.

 

The Hebrew word used shows that the lion was a full grown cub.

 

JDG 14:6 And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, so that he tore him as one tears a kid though he had nothing in his hand; but he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.

 

We see the coming and going of the Holy Spirit in the OT, when He indwells every believer forever in this age. Samson tore the lion to pieces with his bare hands.  

 

In the OT, prior to the cross of Christ, we see the Holy Spirit come upon a person suddenly so that he my perform a certain task. We assume that the Spirit departs when the task is complete since, as in Samson's case, the Spirit will come upon him again in the future.

 

So far we have seen the Spirit come upon Othniel, the first judge, Gideon, and Jephthah. The Spirit was also upon Moses and the elders of Israel to give them wisdom to judge the people in Num 11. The Spirit of God also came upon Balaam when he uttered blessings upon Israel from the mountain.

 

We must see and understand how blessed we are in the church to have the Holy Spirit within us always; always at the ready to empower, teach, and lead us in His will.

 

ROM 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

 

ROM 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

 

ROM 8:3 For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh,

 

ROM 8:4 in order that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

 

ROM 8:5 For those who are according [kata = down or manner] to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

 

ROM 8:6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace,

 

Anything outside of fellowship with Christ is considered death in this chapter because Christ is life, JOH 1:4; COL 3:4.

 

ROM 8:7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so;

 

ROM 8:8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

 

ROM 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

 

ROM 8:10 And if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

 

ROM 8:11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life [Christ] to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you.

 

ROM 8:12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh — 

 

ROM 8:13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die [true life is Christ]; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

 

GAL 5:16

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

 

ROM 8:14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

 

ROM 8:15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!"

 

ROM 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

 

ROM 8:17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.

 

1CO 2:9 but just as it is written,

 

"Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,

And which have not entered the heart of man,

All that God has prepared for those who love Him."

 

1CO 2:10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.
